In 10 sessions you’ll feel the difference, in 20 sessions you’ll see the difference, in 30 sessions you’ll have a whole new body.” - Joseph Pilates

WHO WAS JOSEPH PILATES?

Pilates has been around for over 80 years. It’s founder Joseph Pilates was born in Germany in 1880 and he grew up plagued by illness. Determined to overcome his health problems he studied and developed an exercise programme to assist him back to optimal health.

He observed that where there was a weak or misaligned area in the body a person would over compensate or over develop another area. Therefore it was critical not only to correct the misalignment but also to re-educate the body so that injuries did not repeat themselves. He also believed that true well-being could be achieved by physical fitness and a positive mental attitude.

Joseph first taught his method of exercise which he named “Contrology” when he moved to New York and established a studio for dancers, gymnasts and athletes, with his wife. This method involved the slow controlled flowing movements to strengthen the ‘core’ muscles that stabilise and support the spine, realign the body and help to correct postural problems. Focusing on total concentration, balance, precision and breathing this method emphasised the mind-body connection.

The original name of this unique method was changed to Pilates after his death in 1967 and it was introduced to the UK in the early 1970s. Today Pilates has become very popular with the general public of all ages and levels of fitness. Adaptations, modifications, and progressions to the original 34 exercises have been introduced to cater for different needs making it a totally inclusive method of exercising.
